Golden Heights

Drive-by-flyings

Today I was out looking for the few rapeseed fields that haven’t yet been harvested, and I must have driven for a good 40 minutes without finding a single suitable one, but as I turned back on to the A3, I wondered if there were any on the way up towards Butser Hill, which I would shortly be passing.

Start your engines...

Start your engines…

A worthwhile digression as it turns out, because there’s at least 3 of them nearly at the crest of the hill, and one of the fields had helpful unrestricted access (yep, I could get through that gap). As it was the middle of a working day, there was almost nobody about, but I was resolved to be especially vigilant about other things in the sky (although I didn’t see a single flying thing other than the one I put there in the entire session) and having a clear view in all directions from my launch site, I felt confident to gain a bit of height, and have a pan round the glorious views from Butser Hill, in some directions stretching all the way to the coast…

All the gold, please…

And I got my lovely close-up golden field shots too, and spent quite a bit of time skimming the surface of what was a really very full and attractive field. And not a propeller or head of a single flower was touched as I had 3 textbook perfectly piloted, problem-free flights, of 7, 8,and 7 minutes airtime over the 3 power packs I had with me.

As ever, there was a bit of wind up high, but the Naza-M coped brilliantly with this and most of the footage I got was silky smooth and crystal clear before YouTube ruined it with compression when I uploaded it.

Here’s a mini gallery…

That was also my fifth and final of the test flights this year – I am now satisfied that all my gear has survived another year and remains airworthy.

4 battery packs had to go, which was a shame, and the jack connection from my FPV goggles to the screen is getting ropier every day, but all the bits that actually matter; controller, motors, props, flight controller, mainboard, gimbals etc are all working beautifully well, and getting me lovely quality video, so I am double pleased about that.

But it has become abundantly clear that I could use a couple more 4500 LiPo packs and a diversity receiver with a decent output, so today’s work money got waylaid into savings for that :)

See you next flight…
